Used EV prices: what 10 popular models cost now

The case for a used EV in 2026 is running cost and specific bargains, not a lower sticker across the board: a used Nissan Leaf or Chevy Bolt can be had for well under $20,000. Below: what 10 popular used EVs are listed for by model year, and the one thing to check on each.

Used EV prices are rising, not falling

Used EV prices are up about 8% year over year, but they have eased since June: Cox's average used-EV listing price was $37,832 in July (down 1.2% month over month) and $37,441 in August 2026 (down 1.0%, up 8.2% from a year earlier).

Used EV versus used gas car: the real numbers

Used EVs now cost MORE than comparable used gas and hybrid cars on average. The case for a used EV in 2026 is running cost and specific bargains (Bolt, Leaf, early Ioniq 5 and ID.4), not a lower sticker price across the board.

Running costs are where an EV wins back the difference: see what charging costs versus gas in your state, and our honest take on whether used EVs are cheaper than gas cars.

Before you buy any used EV

  1. Check every recall by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and ask for the dealer work order, not just a 'recall done' note. Several 2026 campaigns have no final repair yet: Mach-E rear differential 26V417 (anticipated late December 2026) and rear quarter window trim 26V487, Mach-E BECM software 26V582 (December 2026, 86 cars), and ID.4 battery 26V630 (remedy under development; 80% charge cap).
  2. Get a battery state-of-health number from a scan or the maker's tool, not the range display. Fleet data says most packs are fine (Recurrent: under 4% ever replaced), but the spread is wide on air-cooled Leafs and on cars with recall history.
  3. Ask how often the car DC fast charged and where it lived: Geotab finds 2.5% a year loss for frequent fast chargers vs 1.5% for rare ones, and hot climates add about 0.4% a year.
  4. Warranty clocks run from the original in-service date. Ask for the date, the remaining years and miles, and confirm by VIN that the battery term transfers: Tesla's warranty, Hyundai's battery table (10 years/100,000 miles for subsequent owners), Kia's EV manual (remaining EV System term) and GM's Bolt EV warranty document state transfer; Ford states it for the New Vehicle Limited Warranty generally; VW, Nissan and GM's Equinox EV transfer wording was not found.
  5. Test AC and DC charging on the drive and ask whether a NACS adapter comes with a CCS car; Ford, GM and Hyundai may decline warranty coverage for charge-port damage from a third-party adapter.
  6. Confirm a clean title; Tesla's warranty may be voided on salvage, rebuilt, flood or total-loss branded vehicles.

Questions people ask

What is the cheapest used EV?

Among the 10 we track, the Nissan Leaf starts lowest, from about $6,500 for older model years, followed by the Chevy Bolt from about $13,500. Check battery health closely on the cheapest cars.

Is there a federal tax credit for used EVs in 2026?

The Previously-Owned Clean Vehicle Credit (25E) is not available for vehicles acquired after Sept 30, 2025. A vehicle acquired on or before that date (binding written contract plus a payment) still qualifies even if placed in service later. Some states and utilities still pay on used EVs; see the table above.

How much battery does a used EV lose?

Geotab (about 22,700 EVs, 21 models; press release Jan 13 2026; blog Apr 28 2026): average battery degradation is 2.3% a year, up from 1.8% in Geotab's earlier study (Geotab's page dates that study 2023 in one place and 2024 in another). Cars that DC fast charge on under 12% of sessions lose 1.5% a year; over 12% lose 2.5% a year. Hot-climate cars lose about 0.4% a year more than mild-climate cars. Ask for a battery health reading on any car you consider.
