Used Hyundai Kona Electric: prices, battery health and what to check

Small, efficient, 258 miles on 2019 to 2023 cars (the 2024 redesign is rated 200 or 261 miles): about $21,000 average asking ($16,700 for 2021 up to $24,800 for 2024). Biggest thing to check: whether a 2019-2020 car actually got its battery inspected or replaced under the recall. Prices are dealer asking prices from October 2026 listings, not sale prices, so expect to negotiate.

Battery health

Across all EVs: Geotab (about 22,700 EVs, 21 models; press release Jan 13 2026; blog Apr 28 2026): average battery degradation is 2.3% a year, up from 1.8% in Geotab's earlier study (Geotab's page dates that study 2023 in one place and 2024 in another). Cars that DC fast charge on under 12% of sessions lose 1.5% a year; over 12% lose 2.5% a year. Hot-climate cars lose about 0.4% a year more than mild-climate cars.

Warranty and whether it transfers

Hyundai USA's 'America's Best Warranty' page lists the Hybrid/Electric Battery at 10 years/100,000 miles for the original owner and 10 years/100,000 miles for a subsequent owner (capacity kept at no less than 70%). Only the Powertrain warranty drops to 5 years/60,000 miles for later owners. Confirm remaining coverage by the car's in-service date and VIN.

What to check before you buy a used Hyundai Kona Electric

  1. On a 2019-2020 car, run the VIN and get the work order for 20V630 / 21V127: was the pack inspected only, or replaced? A replaced pack is the good outcome.
  2. On a 2021 car confirm the coolant-leak control unit recall (22V941) and the brake-control recall (20V748) were done.
  3. Know the generation: Gen 1 (2019-2023) is 64 kWh and 258 miles; Gen 2 (2024+) comes in a 200-mile and a 261-mile version.
  4. Make sure the listing is the Electric, not the gas Kona.
  5. Set charging expectations: 400-volt, about 100 kW at best, so road trips are slower than on an Ioniq 5.
  6. Get a battery health reading and confirm the remaining EV System warranty by VIN.
