Used Chevy Bolt: prices, battery health and what to check

One of the cheapest used EVs with 238 to 259 miles of EPA range: about $18,000 median asking ($14,000 to $21,000 by year). Biggest thing to check: proof the battery recall was fixed, and what warranty the new modules carry. Prices are dealer asking prices from October 2026 listings, not sale prices, so expect to negotiate.

Battery health

Across all EVs: Geotab (about 22,700 EVs, 21 models; press release Jan 13 2026; blog Apr 28 2026): average battery degradation is 2.3% a year, up from 1.8% in Geotab's earlier study (Geotab's page dates that study 2023 in one place and 2024 in another). Cars that DC fast charge on under 12% of sessions lose 1.5% a year; over 12% lose 2.5% a year. Hot-climate cars lose about 0.4% a year more than mild-climate cars.

Warranty and whether it transfers

GM's Bolt EV electric propulsion warranty document (filed with NHTSA) says the coverage runs 8 years or 100,000 miles from the original in-service date and 'is transferable at no cost to any subsequent person(s) who assumes ownership of the vehicle within the 8 years or 100,000 miles term'. The document is Bolt EV wording from the 2017 model-year era; for a recall-replaced pack the 22-NA-119 warranty is tied to the vehicle record (Investigate Vehicle History).

What to check before you buy a used Chevy Bolt

  1. Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and confirm the battery campaigns are closed, including the 2024 follow-ups 24V481 and 24V812 on 2020-2022 cars.
  2. Ask for the service record: were modules or the whole pack replaced, and on what date? Have the dealer pull Applicable Warranties in Investigate Vehicle History; a recall swap carries its own 8-year/100,000-mile parts warranty.
  3. Get a battery state-of-health reading from a scan tool or dealer, not just the range estimate.
  4. On 2017 and early 2018 cars, confirm what warranty is actually left (the original 8-year term has likely expired by time).
  5. Take a long test drive on a 2017-2019 car: the front seats are the most common complaint.
  6. Confirm the car actually has DC fast charging: GM's adapter bulletin applies only to cars with a native CCS1 port and the DC Fast Charging option, and Recurrent notes CCS became standard only with the 2022 refresh. Then test a DC fast charge (the Bolt tops out near 55 kW) and ask whether the seller has the GM NACS adapter.
  7. Confirm the pretensioner recall (22V930, and 23V845 if it was repaired earlier) was done, and if buying an EUV, whether Super Cruise has an active paid plan.

What is the biggest thing to check on a used Chevy Bolt?

Proof the battery recall was fixed, and what warranty the new modules carry. Run the VIN for open recalls and get a battery health reading before you agree on a price.

Which recalls should I ask about on a used Chevy Bolt?

Start with 20V701 / 21V560 / 21V650 (high voltage battery fire risk (LG cells), 2017-2022 Bolt EV, 2022 Bolt EUV); 22V930 / 23V845 (after a crash, seat belt pretensioner exhaust may ignite carpet fibers near the B-pillar, 2017-2023 Bolt EV); 20V184 (rear door-handle cable may damage and open rear door unintentionally, 2019-2020). Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see which apply to a specific car and ask for proof of the repair.

How far does a used Chevy Bolt go on a charge?

EPA-rated range runs from 238 miles (2017, the shortest-range version) to 259 miles (2020), depending on year and battery. An older car will have lost some capacity, so ask for a battery health reading.
