Used Tesla Model 3: prices, battery health and what to check

Most plentiful used EV: about $25,000 median asking ($19,500 for 2018 up to $38,000 for 2025). Biggest thing to check: battery health and which Model 3 generation you are driving. Prices are dealer asking prices from October 2026 listings, not sale prices, so expect to negotiate.

Our price ranges, rounded to $500:

A $8,000 to $10,000 step separates 2023 from 2024; that is the Highland refresh plus the steepest part of depreciation already past. Asking prices, not sale prices.

Battery health

Across all EVs: Geotab (about 22,700 EVs, 21 models; press release Jan 13 2026; blog Apr 28 2026): average battery degradation is 2.3% a year, up from 1.8% in Geotab's earlier study (Geotab's page dates that study 2023 in one place and 2024 in another). Cars that DC fast charge on under 12% of sessions lose 1.5% a year; over 12% lose 2.5% a year. Hot-climate cars lose about 0.4% a year more than mild-climate cars.

Warranty and whether it transfers

We could not confirm on Tesla's own documents whether the battery warranty transfers to a second owner, so confirm it by VIN with a dealer before you buy. The clock always runs from the car's original in-service date.

The NHTSA API pull for Model 3 (2017-2026) and Model Y (2020-2026) returned 51 distinct campaigns, 21 of them flagged as over-the-air fixes. A long list is normal for Tesla because software recalls are filed too; the ones that need a shop visit are the physical ones listed here.

Check any car by VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup and ask for the dealer work order, not just a "recall done" note.

What to check before you buy a used Tesla Model 3

  1. Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls: suspension-fastener and caliper-bolt campaigns need a shop fix, and 2025 cars have the contactor campaign.
  2. Ask for a battery health reading (Tesla app range check, Service Mode test, or a Recurrent report) and ask which pack chemistry the car has (LFP vs NCA) because it sets the daily charge limit.
  3. Know which generation you are test driving: pre-Highland cars (2017 to early 2024) have stalks, Highland cars use wheel buttons and the touchscreen for gear selection. Drive one of each.
  4. Heat pump (2021 and newer) matters in cold climates; on 2021-2022 cars confirm the heat-pump software campaign (22V050000) was applied and that the windshield clears and the cabin heats on the test drive.
  5. Check the software screen for what Autopilot features are really enabled; standard Autopilot stays with the car, paid Enhanced Autopilot or FSD can be inconsistent on resales.
  6. Inspect panel gaps, paint, all four door handles, the rearview camera and the touchscreen.
  7. Confirm the title is clean: Tesla's warranty does not apply to salvage, rebuilt or flood-branded vehicles.

Questions people ask

How much does a used Tesla Model 3 cost?

About $25,000 median asking price in October 2026 dealer listings. By model year: 2018-2020 $18,500 to $23,000; 2021-2023 (pre-Highland, heat pump) $22,000 to $28,000; 2024-2025 (Highland) $34,500 to $39,000. These are asking prices, so expect to negotiate.

What is the biggest thing to check on a used Tesla Model 3?

Battery health and which Model 3 generation you are driving. Run the VIN for open recalls and get a battery health reading before you agree on a price.

Which recalls should I ask about on a used Tesla Model 3?

Start with 21V387 (brake caliper bolts may be loose, 2019-2021 Model 3, 2020-2021 Model Y); 21V835 / 23V235 (front suspension lateral link fasteners may loosen, 2019-2021 Model 3 (21V835); 2018-2019 Model 3 (23V235)); 21V00D000 (rearview camera cable harness may be damaged by trunk opening and closing, all 2017-2020 Model 3). Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see which apply to a specific car and ask for proof of the repair.

How far does a used Tesla Model 3 go on a charge?

EPA-rated range runs from 220 miles (2019, the shortest-range version) to 363 miles (2024), depending on year and battery. An older car will have lost some capacity, so ask for a battery health reading.
