Used Volkswagen ID.4: prices, battery health and what to check

Cheap for the size: about $22,800 median asking ($18,800 for 2021 up to $25,000 for 2024). Biggest thing to check: VW's 2025-2026 high voltage battery recalls on 2023-2026 cars, one of which has no remedy yet and caps charging at 80%. Prices are dealer asking prices from October 2026 listings, not sale prices, so expect to negotiate.

Battery health

Across all EVs: Geotab (about 22,700 EVs, 21 models; press release Jan 13 2026; blog Apr 28 2026): average battery degradation is 2.3% a year, up from 1.8% in Geotab's earlier study (Geotab's page dates that study 2023 in one place and 2024 in another). Cars that DC fast charge on under 12% of sessions lose 1.5% a year; over 12% lose 2.5% a year. Hot-climate cars lose about 0.4% a year more than mild-climate cars.

Warranty and whether it transfers

We could not confirm on Volkswagen's own documents whether the battery warranty transfers to a second owner, so confirm it by VIN with a dealer before you buy. The clock always runs from the car's original in-service date.

What to check before you buy a used Volkswagen ID.4

  1. Run the VIN for every battery campaign: 25V836 / 26V028 (2023-2024), 26V030 (2023-2025) and the new 26V630 (2023-2026). Ask for proof of completion; for 26V630 no repair exists yet.
  2. If a battery recall is open, ask the seller to price in the 80% charge cap and the inability to DC fast charge (25V836/26V028), or wait for the remedy.
  3. Door-handle recall 24V651 (2021-2024): confirm the handles were inspected or replaced.
  4. 12-volt and charger: on 2024 cars confirm the OCDC recall (25V125); on any car test that the 12-volt battery is healthy.
  5. Software: confirm the display and rearview camera recalls were applied and the infotainment boots and does not reset.
  6. Expect real winter range well under EPA: Recurrent saw losses up to 30% below 50F, and the ID.4 has no heat pump on Recurrent's list.
  7. Get a battery state-of-health reading; confirm the NACS adapter is included if you want Supercharger access.
