EV incentives in South Dakota

Verified July 2026

The EV fee just doubled to $100/yr (Feb 2026) — yet SD is quietly the best of the northern plains: Sioux Valley co-op pays a $500 EV purchase rebate and Black Hills pays $500 toward a charger.

The $7,500 federal new-EV credit and $4,000 used-EV credit ended September 30, 2025 — and the federal home-charger credit (30C) followed on June 30, 2026. If anyone tells you otherwise, they're reading an old script. (Charger installed on or before June 30, 2026? That one's still claimable on that year's return — IRS Form 8911.)

What SD offers on the purchase

No state-level purchase incentive right now — the money in South Dakota, if any, is at the utility level.

Utility money

Sioux Valley Energy (eastern SD co-op) — $500

$500 rebate on a BEV purchase/lease ($250 PHEV) with time-of-use enrollment — plus off-peak charging at 6.6¢/kWh vs 17¢ peak.

The catch: South Dakota charges EV owners an extra $100/yr at registration.

Doubled from $50 by 2026 legislation — some databases still show the stale $50.
