Is an EV cheaper than gas in Los Angeles?

Yes, by a lot. On LADWP's average home rate, charging an EV costs the same per mile as gas at $2.14 a gallon. Gas in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area averaged $6.35 on October 12, 2026, so 1,000 miles a month costs about $79 to charge versus $235 in gas: roughly $156 a month back.

Which utility are you on?

Your electric utility sets what charging costs, so here are the numbers for each one serving Los Angeles.

LADWP

Serves the city of Los Angeles

Average home rate 26.5 cents per kWh (2025). Charging costs the same per mile as gas at $2.14 a gallon: about $79 for 1,000 miles versus $235 in gas.

Southern California Edison (SCE)

Serves most of the rest of Los Angeles County

Average home rate 31.5 cents per kWh (2025). Charging costs the same per mile as gas at $2.55 a gallon: about $94 for 1,000 miles versus $235 in gas.

Some cities, like Glendale, Burbank and Pasadena, run their own utilities. Many SCE-area homes buy the power itself through Clean Power Alliance, with SCE delivering it, at a different rate.

Why this holds up when gas spikes

Gas prices jumped in 2026 when the war with Iran disrupted oil shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Home electricity is priced by utilities under state regulators and moves far more slowly, so the gap tends to widen when gas spikes. For a 27 mpg car to cost less per mile than charging at home in Los Angeles, gas would have to fall below $2.14 a gallon.

How we calculated it

We assume 1,000 miles a month, a typical new EV that uses 30 kWh per 100 miles, a 27 mpg gas car, and home charging at each utility's average residential rate, which includes its fixed monthly charges. An overnight or EV rate is often cheaper than that average, and public fast charging costs much more. Treat this as the honest average, not your bill.

Questions people ask

Is an EV cheaper than gas in Los Angeles?

Yes. Charging at home on LADWP (26.5 cents per kWh, 2025) costs about $79 per 1,000 miles. The same miles in a 27 mpg car cost about $235 at the $6.35 Los Angeles gas average on October 12, 2026. California's $121/yr EV fee still leaves about $1,748 a year in your favor.

How low would gas have to go to beat an EV in Los Angeles?

About $2.14 to $2.55 a gallon, depending on your utility: $2.14 on LADWP and $2.55 on SCE. That is what a 27 mpg car would need to pay to match the cost per mile of charging at home.

How much does it cost to charge an EV in Los Angeles?

At home, about $79 per 1,000 miles on LADWP (26.5 cents per kWh) or $94 per 1,000 miles on SCE (31.5 cents per kWh), for a typical EV that uses 30 kWh per 100 miles. Public fast charging costs much more per kWh than home charging, so these numbers assume you charge at home most of the time.

Are there EV rebates in Los Angeles?

California has state EV money open right now (see the California guide), and utilities here add their own: LADWP: Used EV Rebate ($1,500 to $4,000); LADWP: residential charger rebate (up to $1,500); SCE: Pre-Owned EV Rebate ($1,000 to $4,000); SCE Charge Ready Home: panel upgrade, income-qualified (up to $4,200).
